The Magic City Discovery Center is excited to announce the hire of the museum’s first Education and Outreach Director, Liz Weeks – with her primary goal of starting and running the region’s premiere STEAM outreach into schools and communities, called Discovery on the Go!.
Discovery on the Go! is a mobile educational program bringing STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) activities to classrooms and schools throughout the Minot region and northwest North Dakota. During the school year, teachers and school administrators can schedule classroom visits, school-wide assemblies, and Family STEAM Nights. During breaks in the school year and during summer break, the Magic City Discovery Center (MCDC) will offer educational STEAM camps to children of various ages.
The Discovery on the Go! program will support teachers and parents, helping to introduce problem-solving, critical thinking skills, and hands-on learning to children. “I am excited to provide this opportunity for learning and discovering with Discovery on the Go! even before we open our permanent discovery center!” said Liz Weeks.
“We know that getting novel, hands-on, STEAM-based educational opportunities into classrooms and schools can only help our region’s children be more excited about learning and growing. We hope that the Discovery on the Go! program will provide a long-term basis for excitement in our young people about the many careers available to them involving science, technology, engineering, arts and math,” said Mark Lyman, Children’s Museum of Minot Board President.
The focus for the first year of Discovery on the Go! will be to provide STEAM learning opportunities to area public and private elementary schools, with future plans to expand into the region’s middle schools.
Weeks is a former Minot Public School Elementary Teacher, teaching at Dakota Elementary School on Minot Air Force Base. She and her husband, Sean, have two children and have lived in Minot since 2011.
