Outside my window

The Outside My Window Gallery is a space that celebrates North Dakota outdoors. It's designed for children seven  and younger. Filled with engaging, developmentally appropriate activities, Outside My Window provides experiences that represent North Dakota’s natural world. Young visitors and their caregivers experience the change of seasons in this gallery, as well as, the progression from day to night. It's location on the first floor in an area away from visitor pathways assures a safe environment for younger visitors. The immersive environment is divided into three experience zones: My Backyard, Outdoor Adventures, and Fields and Farms.

How Adults can Support discovery, Creativity, Exploration, and Play in Outside My Window

  • Don’t be afraid to get dressed up and play too! This encourages children to continue playing and makes the experience more fun for both of you!

  • Take cues to push the scene forward! What’s on sale at the grocery store today? What kind of vegetables are in season today? What other animals are you friends with little owl? 

  • North Dakota has a lot to experience! Here are some fast facts!

    • Nicknamed the Peace Garden State

    • Our state flower is the Wild Prairie Rose

    • Our state bird is the Western  Meadowlark (can you spot one on the Magic Climber?)

    • Dakota is a Native American Sioux word that roughly means “friend” 

    • President Theodore Roosevelt was once a cattle rancher in North Dakota!
