This summer, we’re diving into the secret world of codes, clues, and covert operations with our Spy Academy summer camp—and trust us, the science behind being a secret agent is as cool as the mission itself.
At first glance, spy work might look like it’s all trench coats and sunglasses, but real “spy” skills are grounded in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (yes—STEAM is the real secret weapon!). From fingerprint analysis to secret ink messages, spy science makes learning exciting, hands-on, and full of surprises.
Secret Codes and Cryptography
Spies need to send messages without getting caught—and that means cracking (and creating!) secret codes. At camp, kids will explore the basics of cryptography, the ancient science of writing and solving codes. According to the University of London, Cryptography turns readable information into secret messages (called ciphertext) that only someone with the right key can decode. From the ancient Caesar cipher to today’s powerful encryption tools like Advanced Encryption Standard and digital signatures, cryptography helps protect everything from private texts to top-secret missions (and your bank info, too!). Spies—and cybersecurity experts—use it to send messages that only the right people can read, making it a high-tech, puzzle-packed way to outsmart digital snoops. Whether you’re encoding secret messages or securing the web, cryptography is the ultimate tool in your spy kit!
Fingerprint Forensics
Did you know no two fingerprints are alike? Not even identical twins! Campers will get hands-on with forensic science, learning how to dust for prints, analyze patterns (loops, whorls, and arches!), and solve mini-mysteries using real investigative techniques. INTERPOL’s Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) uses powerful technology to match fingerprints across the globe, helping catch criminals and uncover hidden identities. From dusty crime scenes to high-tech databases, fingerprints can link suspects to scenes, crack international cases, and even help identify victims of disasters. With three main fingerprint patterns—arches, loops, and whorls—plus hundreds of tiny details called minutiae, your fingers hold more info than a spy’s secret dossier. Thanks to science, detectives and agents around the world can now use fingerprints to solve real-life mysteries faster than ever!
Invisible Ink and Chemistry in Disguise
At Spy Academy, one of the coolest tools in your secret agent arsenal is invisible ink—and it’s not just the stuff of mystery novels! According to Scientific American, during World War I, real spies like George Vaux Bacon used socks soaked in a secret brown paste to write messages no one could see. That’s right—sock ink! Bacon, a journalist turned undercover agent for the Germans, would dip his black wool socks in water to create a light brown liquid, perfect for sneaky spy letters. British detectives eventually cracked the code using chemistry and clever lab work, proving that invisible ink wasn’t just magical—it was scientific. So when we break out the lemon juice and cotton swabs at Spy Academy, remember: you're following in the footsteps (and socks) of real-life secret agents!
Disguises, Gadgets, and Engineering
From listening devices to spy pens, gadgets are essential spy tools. Our young agents will learn how to disguise themselves. They will use engineering and design skills to build simple periscopes and rearview glasses. According to the UN Academy, periscopes work using the principles of light and reflection. By placing mirrors at 45-degree angles inside a simple tube, light from an object is bounced down to the viewer’s eye, allowing them to see over, under, or around obstacles without being seen themselves. Campers will discover how this clever device has been used throughout history, from ancient Greece to modern submarines and military vehicles. It’s not just for spies; scientists use periscopes to safely observe nuclear reactions, and doctors use similar technology in delicate medical instruments. Building their own periscopes will help campers see firsthand how physics and engineering can turn everyday materials into tools of exploration, discovery, and stealth. It’s a perfect mix of science and sneakiness—and that’s what makes it so cool!
