At the Magic City Discovery Center, we believe that every child and family deserves the chance to explore, discover, and play in a way that feels comfortable and welcoming. For some families, a busy museum environment can feel overwhelming. That’s why we host Sensory Friendly Night, a special evening designed to make hands-on STEAM learning more accessible for individuals with sensory sensitivities, special needs, or different abilities.
Held every third Monday of the month, Sensory Friendly Night offers a quieter, calmer version of the museum experience while still keeping all the fun, creativity, and discovery that make the Discovery Center special.
What Is Sensory Friendly Night?
Sensory Friendly Night is an opportunity for individuals with sensory processing differences, autism, developmental disabilities, or other sensory needs (and their families, guardians, and caregivers!) to enjoy the museum in a supportive environment.
During these evenings, we make thoughtful adjustments to help reduce sensory overload and create a more relaxed atmosphere. Families are welcome to explore the museum at their own pace and enjoy exhibits in a space designed with comfort in mind.
What You Can Expect
Adjusted sound levels throughout the museum
Limited attendance to create a calmer environment
Sensory bags available at the front desk
Freedom to explore at your own pace
Our sensory bags include helpful tools such as fidgets, weighted items, and noise-reducing headphones that can help visitors feel more comfortable while exploring exhibits.
STEAM Learning for Every Learner
Sensory Friendly Night isn’t just about a quieter space, it’s also about making STEAM learning accessible for everyone.
STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math, and these subjects come to life through the Discovery Center’s interactive exhibits. During Sensory Friendly Night, visitors can experiment, build, test ideas, and explore curiosity-driven learning in a way that works best for them.
Hands-on learning experiences can be especially powerful for differently abled learners because they allow visitors to:
Explore concepts through touch, movement, and experimentation
Learn through visual and physical interaction
Build confidence by trying, adjusting, and trying again
Engage curiosity in a self-directed way
There’s no right or wrong way to explore the museum; we just want STEAM to be fun and accessible to all!
Why Inclusive Spaces Matter
Museums are places of curiosity, creativity, and connection. By offering Sensory Friendly Nights, the Discovery Center helps ensure that more families can enjoy these experiences without stress or barriers.
Creating an inclusive environment allows visitors of all abilities to:
Feel comfortable and welcome
Engage with STEAM learning
Spend meaningful time together as a family
Discover new interests and passions
For many families, these evenings provide a rare opportunity to explore a community space designed with their needs in mind.
