At the Magic City Discovery Center, creativity is both encouraged and celebrated. Take a step into the Creativity Studio, and you’ll find a vibrant, ever-changing space where imagination leads the way and there’s no such thing as “doing it wrong.”
This 900-square-foot studio is an art room and a hands-on STEAM environment where Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math come together through exploration, experimentation, and play. Children of all ages are invited to take creative risks, solve problems, and express themselves freely using a wide variety of materials, tools, and techniques.
A Space Designed for Fearless Creativity
Located on the lower level of the museum and filled with natural light, the Creativity Studio is designed to feel open, welcoming, and inspiring. The space is intentionally built to support process-based learning, meaning the focus isn’t on the final product; it’s on the experience of creating.
Kids can explore:
Painting, drawing, and mixed media
Printmaking, textiles, and clay
Recycled and unconventional materials
Technology-based creativity, like animation
Featured Experiences in the Creativity Studio
The Paint Wall: One of the most eye-catching features of the studio, the Paint Wall invites kids to paint on a large vertical glass surface. Using paint dobbers and washable paints, children create bold, expressive artwork. Working vertically helps build muscle strength, coordination, and spatial awareness, while also allowing kids to see their art from a whole new perspective.
The Gallery: Inside the studio, children’s artwork doesn’t disappear when they’re done! The Gallery displays paintings, prints, and other projects created by young artists, helping build confidence and pride while reinforcing that their ideas matter.
Animation Station: Creativity meets technology at the Animation Station, where kids can bring their ideas to life through digital storytelling. By combining hand-made art with simple animation tools, children explore how art and technology work together!
The STEAM Behind the Art
The Creativity Studio is where art becomes a gateway to deeper learning. Every creative choice connects to real-world concepts:
Science: Mixing colors, exploring light, experimenting with materials
Technology: Creating digital art and animation
Engineering: Designing structures, solving creative challenges
Art: Expressing ideas, emotions, and stories
Math: Recognizing patterns, shapes, symmetry, and scale
Whether a child is weaving, painting, or building, they’re developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovative thinking skills.
Growth Through Creativity
The Creativity Studio supports development in ways that go far beyond art. Through hands-on experiences, children:
Build fine motor skills (cutting, painting, assembling)
Develop communication and collaboration skills through shared projects
Strengthen confidence and independence by making their own creative choices
Learn to reflect and problem-solve when things don’t go as planned
Explore culture, history, and personal identity through artistic expression
It’s a space where kids can turn ideas into something real and learn that mistakes are simply part of the process.
How Adults Can Support Creative Learning
Grown-ups play an important role in the Creativity Studio experience. You don’t need to be an artist, just a curious partner in discovery.
Try:
Asking open-ended questions like “Tell me about what you made.”
Encouraging experimentation because there are no right or wrong answers in art
Demonstrating a technique, then letting kids try it themselves
Talking about what worked, what didn’t, and what they’d try next
Connecting art to culture, history, or everyday life
It’s Discovery AND Art!
The Creativity Studio reflects what the Discovery Center is all about: learning through creativity, exploration, and play. It’s a place where children can take risks, think differently, and discover new ways to express themselves.
Come explore the Creativity Studio and see where your imagination takes you!
