5 Back-To-School Tips to Foster the Magic of Lifelong Learning

As backpacks are zipped and lunchboxes are packed, the excitement (and nerves!) of a new school year begins. But here at the Magic City Discovery Center, our mission is to engage children and families in the magic of lifelong learning through discovery, creativity, and play.

Here are some tips to support your child and your whole family on a lifelong learning adventure:

1. Create a Learning-Friendly Environment at Home

A quiet, organized space helps kids focus, but it doesn’t have to be fancy. A simple bin of crayons, blocks, or books can turn any corner into a curiosity zone. Encourage kids to explore freely and make mistakes because that’s how discovery happens!

Try This: Set up a "maker station" with recyclables, art supplies, and basic tools to invite open-ended exploration.

2. Model a Love for Learning

Kids are always watching! When they see adults reading, asking questions, or trying new things, they learn that learning doesn’t end with school; it’s a lifelong superpower!

Tip: Say things like, “I don’t know. Let’s look it up together!” or “I’m trying something new too!”

3. Prioritize Play! (Yes, Even During the School Year)

Unstructured play helps children develop problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity. It's also vital for emotional regulation and brain development, especially after long days of structure and screens.

Need inspiration? Visit us at the Discovery Center, where play and learning collide in every exhibit.

4. Focus on Progress, Not Perfection

Growth mindset, or the belief that abilities develop through effort, is one of the most powerful tools for learning success. Celebrate effort, curiosity, and persistence, not just correct answers.

Did You Know? Studies show that students with a growth mindset perform better academically and emotionally over time (Dweck, 2006).

5. Stay Curious Together

Learning as a family deepens bonds and keeps the spark alive for everyone. Watch a documentary, visit a museum, or try a new experiment in the kitchen. Let your kids see that discovery is fun, valuable, and something we never outgrow.

Join Us: Our interactive exhibits and seasonal programs are designed to support curiosity across all ages, so come explore, question, and create with us!

Support & Encourage Lifelong Learning

Back-to-school season is the perfect time to reset your family’s approach to learning. Let’s make this year not just about grades, but about wonder, resilience, and a lifetime of discovery.
